Diagnostic Imaging

Moonee Beach Veterinary Surgery is fully equipped with companion animal diagnostic imaging such as, Ultrasound and Digital Xray technology. Our skilled team of veterinarians and nurses are fully trained to perform these diagnostics effectively and safely for your pets.

X-rays and Ultrasounds

Our clinic is equipped with CR digital radiographs and ultrasonography equipment. Prior to undergoing x-rays or ultrasounds, our veterinarians conduct a physical exam of your pet in consultation with yourself to determine if either of these diagnostics are required and if so, what part of the body should be captured on the imaging.

Unlike the human healthcare system, radiographs and ultrasounds can be performed in-house at our surgery and can be booked in advance or performed on the day in emergency cases. Our turnaround time for results varies and is evaluated on a case by case situation from a couple of hours to 72 hours depending on complexity.

We know always have your pets best medical care and treatment at heart. So, call us today if you think your pet may benefit from radiographs.

Why do pets need radiographs and ultrasounds?

  • Orthopaedic radiographs are used to determine injury such as fractures, bone cysts/tumours, growth plate injuries or developmental bone diseases. They can also determine if an animal has arthritis and to what degree.
  • Thoracic radiographs are used to evaluate airways, lungs and heart. Common reasons to require chest x-rays are sudden exercise intolerance, difficulty breathing, increasingly severe coughing and or gagging etc.
  • Abdominal radiographs are used for patients where an abnormality is felt during physical examination, such as an abdominal mass, constipation or in a vomiting patient.
  • Ultrasounds are useful to diagnose pregnancy, liver disease, splenic abnormalities such as tumours or trauma, kidney/bladder conditions or gastrointestinal diseases.

What do radiographs and ultrasounds reveal?

Animal diagnostic Imaging such as, X-rays and Ultrasounds are an essential tool that help identify injuries, diseases and potential ongoing medical conditions in animals.

How are radiographs done?

It is most often necessary to sedate your pet to ensure quality diagnostics, however this is assessed on a case by case basis. The reason for this is that most animals will not lie still in the correct position for long enough for us to obtain good quality diagnostic imaging. Sedating your pet allows us to get the best possible imaging in the quickest time, creating a less stressful experience for your pet.
